Confused by crypto currency

Are you one of those who is confused by how crypto currency works? I heard about crypto the moment it came out but until this very day I have no idea how it works and why people invest so much money into it. I have a feeling it's like some type of stock market where currency has fluctuations which works great. I buy 10 bitcons today and they worth some amount of money, tomorrow the value of it rises and I got more money without doing anything. 

Anyone care to explain it better to me?
